Ending Hunger And Poverty
. . . .
GET INVOLVED
We believe that every person deserves a childhood free from hunger. We believe that our vision for Sir Lowry’s Pass will save lives and create a sustainable, healthier community. We believe that empowering the Soup Moms is just the first step in a larger, positive transformation for South Africa. We know that it will take a great amount of support to create a better future.
Together, we can make a genuine impact in our local communities, in Sir Lowry’s Pass, and beyond. The battle against hunger begins now, and it begins here.
Soup Mom Suppers
A Soup Mom Supper is an engaging and educational experience for SMOSA volunteers and all of those who wish to be involved and learn more about what we do as an organization. Food prepared by volunteers, covered-dish dinners, and meals donated by local restaurants and food services are just a few options. In addition to an affordable dinner of only $5 per person, those who wish to participate learn about the meaning of Ubuntu, involve themselves in fun cooperative team-building activities, and are further familiarized with the mission/vision of SMOSA. It is important that SMOSA leaders take an active role in planning and guiding this event.
Run To Raise
Every community offers numerous road race events that provide good opportunities for partnership and collaboration. For example, in our first annual Run to Raise event, we partnered with the YMCA and participated in their Heart and Sole 5k/half-marathon. For the Run to Raise event, SMOSA leaders organize volunteers and members of the community into teams. Teams are awarded points for their Ubuntu Spirit, amount of funds raised, and average race times. The teams with the highest amount of points have the opportunity to win prizes. Each team is able to make a fundraising page through the resources available on our website and is encouraged to seek local sponsors for their cause. This friendly competition not only raises hunger awareness, but is a way to build participation in the community.
Hike For Hunger
In recent years, great strides have been made to create greenways and hiking trails in our communities. Soup Moms of South Africa and SMOSA volunteers use these precious resources to organize our annual Hike for Hunger where hundreds hit the trails to raise hunger awareness. With food, music, and fun kid activities at the end of the trail, there is no better way to spend an afternoon with family and friends. For this event, SMOSA partners with local hunger-relief organizations such as soup kitchens and food banks. Participants are required to pay an entry fee and bring canned goods to support the local partnering organization involved in the event.
Ubuntu Advocacy
Ubuntu Advocacy is a leadership and mentoring program for SMOSA volunteers who wish to make a deeper commitment and have greater involvement in our efforts. Ubuntu Advocates are individuals who embrace the philosophy of Ubuntu and make a commitment to serving others as they become global citizens. Ubuntu Advocates recruit SMOSA volunteers and establish SMOSA chapters in their schools and communities. Ubuntu Advocates often host SMOSA events (such as Soup Mom Suppers, Run to Raise, and Hunger Hikes) and spread hunger awareness through regular community service work at local soup kitchens and food banks. Many of our Ubuntu Advocates have come up with new and creative ways to spread Ubuntu as well as new fundraising initiatives. Ubuntu Advocates work closely with the leaders of SMOSA. The leaders of SMOSA provide resources and are available to give advice and answer any questions. Ubuntu Advocates play a pivotal role in what we do as an organization.

Soup Mom Supper
Bring the Ubuntu spirit alive in your community or campus by organizing a Soup Mom Supper with your friends and family. It is easy; invite a small or large group of people to a home-cooked meal and simply enjoy each other’s company. In addition to an affordable dinner of only $5 per person, those who attend learn the true meaning of Ubuntu, involve themselves in fun cooperative team activities, and are familiarized with the mission and vision of SMOSA.
Hunger Hike
Head up a walk or hike with family, friends, the youth of the community, and like-minded groups to spread awareness about the issue of global hunger and generate funds through local sponsorships. Try your best to get a large amount of volunteers to oversee the event. In addition, to educate and get the children of the community involved in your hunger hike, you can partner with local schools and after-school programs. You can sell t-shirts and other merchandise for your hunger hike as well.
Lace Up Against Hunger
Participating in a road race is a personal challenge, but you can make the experience even more rewarding by raising awareness and funds to fight hunger in South Africa. Whether you are running a 5k or your first marathon, you have the power to save lives. To further the SMOSA mission and spirit of Ubuntu, try your best to participate in a race for another charity or non-profit organization in your community. Start a personal fundraising page and invite your friends and family to support your efforts. Don’t be afraid to ask local businesses to sponsor your race as well.
