Soup Mom Supper
A Soup Mom Supper is an engaging and educational experience for SMOSA volunteers and all of those who wish to be involved and learn more about what we do as an organization. Food prepared by volunteers, covered-dish dinners, and meals donated by local restaurants and food services are just a few options. In addition to an affordable dinner of only $5 per person, those who wish to participate learn about the meaning of Ubuntu, involve themselves in fun cooperative team-building activities, and are further familiarized with the mission/vision of SMOSA.
Run to Raise
Every community offers numerous road race events that provide good opportunities for partnership and collaboration. For the Run to Raise event, SMOSA leaders organize volunteers and members of the community into teams. Teams are awarded points for their Ubuntu Spirit, amount of funds raised, and race times. The teams with the highest amount of points have the opportunity to win prizes. Each team is able to make a fundraising page through the resources available on our website and is encouraged to seek local sponsors for their cause. This friendly competition not only raises hunger awareness, but is a way to build participation in the community.
Hike for Hunger
In recent years, great strides have been made to create greenways and hiking trails in our communities. Soup Moms of South Africa and SMOSA volunteers use these precious resources to organize our annual Hike for Hunger where hundreds hit the trails to raise hunger awareness. With food, music, and fun kid activities at the end of the trail, there is no better way to spend an afternoon with family and friends. For this event, SMOSA partners with local hunger-relief organizations such as soup kitchens and food banks. Participants are required to pay an entry fee and bring canned goods to support the local partnering organization involved in the event.
Ubuntu Advocacy
Ubuntu Advocacy is a leadership and mentoring program for SMOSA volunteers who wish to make a deeper commitment and have greater involvement in our efforts. Ubuntu Advocates recruit SMOSA volunteers and establish chapters in their schools and communities. Ubuntu Advocates often host SMOSA events and spread hunger awareness through regular community service work at local soup kitchens and food banks. Many of our Ubuntu Advocates have come up with new and creative ways to spread Ubuntu as well as new fundraising initiatives. The leaders of SMOSA provide resources and are available to give advice and answer any questions. Ubuntu Advocates play a pivotal role in what we do as an organization.
